Solid Cherry Furniture – Made in Maine
Chilton is a family-owned company dedicated to selling fine, American-made wood
furniture at excellent prices. We hold classic Shaker design in the highest esteem,
and specialize in Shaker-inspired cherry.
Most of our furniture is handcrafted in a small Maine factory with Shaker-like dedication
to workmanship, function and simplicity of line and form. All of our furniture is
made in America.
We are also known for the quality craftsmanship of our custom work. Our Maine craftsmen
can make anything you desire from a photo or drawing.
The Chilton Name
The Chilton name is as old as New England. James Chilton and his family were passengers
on the Mayflower. Legend has it that James' daughter, Mary Chilton, was the first
to set foot on Plymouth Rock. She was reportedly so excited to arrive in the New
World that she leapt from the dingy and waded ashore.
Descendants of Mary Chilton formed a corporation in Portland, Maine during the manufacturing
boom that followed the Civil War. It reorganized in 1905 under the name Chilton
Paint Company, selling a wide range of paints, varnishes, and industrial coatings.
One of Chilton Paint’s biggest clients was Steinway & Sons for whom we produced
custom finishes, including the signature black lacquer. In the 1970s Chilton shifted
gears and began selling furniture. Quality furniture remains our focus today.
