The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Community was founded in 1783 by a group of Shaker missionaries. Always referred to as, “the least of Mother’s children in the east,” Sabbathday Lake was one of the numerically smallest and poorest of the eastern Shaker Communities. This struggle brought forth a very strong spiritual gift that saw the community through difficult times, and today, Sabbathday Lake is the only remaining active Shaker Community in the world.
Sabbathday Lake presently consists of eighteen buildings located on 1,800 acres of land. They maintain a tree farm, apple orchard, vegetable gardens, commercial herb garden, hay fields, pastures, a flock of sheep, and a variety of livestock. Other occupations include manufacturing of fancy goods, basket making, weaving, printing, and the manufacturing of some small woodenware. Located just half an hour outside of Portland, Maine, a trip to Sabbathday Lake makes for an unforgettable visit.
Chilton is very proud to support the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Community, and is proud to have partnered with Sabbathday Lake and Tappan Chairs to reintroduce into modern production the Alfred Village Chair and Alfred Village Rocker. A portion of all chair sales go to support the Sabbathday Lake community.
It’s common to hear a ladder-backed chair called a “Shaker Chair”— in the 19th century, the Shaker communities built beautiful chairs and sold many throughout the United States; so much so, that their name became synonymous with a style of chair that had been in common use for centuries before. Yet at the same time as the Shakers were marketing their chairs, a host of contemporaries also existed across our country, and as one of them the Tappan family was quietly cornering the local market with durable and appealing chairs. Simple and elegant, Tappan Chairs are similar in appearance to Shaker furniture, yet they developed independently and concurrently to that movement as a secular statement of handmade, homespun craftsmanship.
A 14th generation potter from Japan, Hanako Nakazato's technique and philosophy are rooted in the ceramic traditions of Karatsu, Japan. But years spent living in the West has influenced her shapes and surfaces. She currently divides her time between studios in Japan and Maine. Chilton Furniture is proud to offer a selection of her simple functional forms.

Portland Good Theater
Chilton is pleased to be a recurring Season Sponsor of the Portland Good Theater. Founded in 2001 by Brian P. Allen and Stephen Underwood, the Good Theater is a live theatrical arts company housed in the St. Lawrence Arts Center on Munjoy Hill in Portland, Maine. The Good Theater produces approximately six shows per season and typically runs five to six showings per week. The goals for Good Theater are simple: Good Theater is dedicated to presenting quality theatrical productions that are entertaining, uplifting, and inspiring, using the best artists available. The Good Theater received its 501c3 non-profit status in May 2003.
