Penobscot Sleigh Bed
The Penobscot collection is named after the great river that runs through the center of Maine and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Before dams were placed on the river, ocean ships could travel all the way inland to Bangor, which was the lumber export capital of the world in the 1800's, to pick up their wooden cargo. There were so many boats in the river it is said you could walk from deck to deck to cross between the two cities of Bangor and Brewer.
The Penobscot sleigh bed is a modern take on the cozy Victorian sleigh bed, with clean, elegant lines.
Chilton was once again honored to be able to showcase our furniture in an episode of the National TV series Tree House Masters as seen on Animal Planet. This project was closer to home as a they built a beautiful lake side tree house in Monmouth, ME. This project featured two of our beds, the Penobscot Sleigh and the Shaker Arch. We are hoping they are providing a restful night sleep after a day of play and adventure in the canopy of the forest. You can see the full 2018 episode here.

Built in cherry, this bed is designed to be used as a platform bed that only requires a mattress or accommodates a standard mattress and foundation. Seven plywood boards, each 1/2" thick by 15 3/4"W, make up the bed foundation. This rests on 1" x 1" cleats attached to solid wood rails. Also there is a solid wood spine that runs under the plywood for extra support, in the center of the bed, suspended by 3 adjustable feet.
Please note that when your new cherry wood furniture arrives, it may be lighter in color than the wood shown in the accompanying photo. New cherry wood is initially a pale, straw color and gradually darkens to a beautiful amber over time with exposure to light.

A Standard bed frame typically comes with 3-5 "slats", or pieces of wood that lay across the side rails of the bed frame. These slats are designed to hold a traditional box spring, or foundation, which sits under a mattress to provide support.
A Platform bed has either plywood or sufficient slats running down the length of the bed frame to directly support a mattress without the need for a box spring.
Platform beds typically cost a little more than Standard ones, but they avoid the need to purchase a box spring and allow for a more modern, lower profile look.

Delivery times can take between two and nine weeks, depending on location and distance from our Maine warehouse. Delivery Costs for Lighting and Home Accessories
When lighting and home accessories are ordered along with furniture, the delivery expense is included in the cost of the furniture delivery. When ordered separately, the delivery cost for lighting is a flat $45 for an unlimited number of lighting pieces. The delivery cost for smaller home accessories is $9.95. For larger home accessories ordered separately that can be shipped by common carrier, please call us for a quote.

We purchased 2 Penobscot night stands to compliment the sleigh bed we purchased earlier in the year. The quality of all items is excellent - beautiful finishes and robust design. We're very pleased with Chilton and plan to add a dresser to our set in the near future.
Wood is gorgeous and the lines are very graceful. It is quite sturdy despite its delicacy.
The bed is lovely and well made. The finish is a smooth cherry in a rich color. The one drawback is that under the bed the four wooden supports are not finished, and I feel they should match the finish of the bed. If I sit in my reading chair in the bedroom, I can see the unfinished supports and I also can see them if I look at the bed from the hallway. This is a minor flaw which I wish I had noticed in the showroom.
Beautiful bed, very well constructed. A wonderful focal point to my newly renovated master bedroom. Next, I'll look at dressers and nigihtstands!
