Chilton Furniture and Sea Bags Collaborate on Uniquely Maine Nautical Bed

Chilton Furniture Co. and Sea Bags of Maine are pleased to announce the introduction of the High Mast Bed, a collaboration inspired by Maine's woodworking and seafaring heritage.

The frame for the High Mast Bed is a modern interpretation of a classic four poster bed.  It is an original Chilton design with clean lines and turned legs shaped to resemble the front legs of the Alfred Village rocking chair, an authentic Shaker chair currently sold only at Chilton and the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village.

The headboard for the bed was designed and manufactured by Sea Bags from genuine repurposed sailcloth. The sailcloth headboard is affixed securely to the headpost "masts" with brass grommets and marine rope, giving the headboard a distinct, nautical look.

"After sails have soaked up years of salt, sun, fun and adventure, we carefully hand-picked and prepared the sails for each headboard. With the original sail stitching and markings, they retain the essence of what they were and where they’ve been, which makes each one truly unique," said Sea Bags President, Beth Shissler.  "Our collaboration with Chilton is a great way for two Maine companies to work together to create a great piece for your home. It truly is a limited-edition piece.”

“We are delighted for the opportunity to work with Sea Bags to make this vision a reality,” said Jen Levin, Chilton co-owner. "As a Maine furniture company, we look forward to incorporating sailcloth into an expanded collection of beds and lounge chairs, both for comfort and to honor Maine's nautical heritage.”

A prototype of the High Mast Bed will be displayed for the first time at the Maine Boats Homes & Harbors Show in Rockland, Maine at the Chilton booth from August 11 to August 13, and will feature bedding from Portland linen company, Always Piper.  The beds will be available in maple, cherry or oak hardwood frames along with a selection of sailcloth colors.

Chilton and Sea Bags ultimately plan on incorporating sailcloth into additional beds and lounge seating.  The High Mast Bed will be commercially available this fall, when it can be viewed in Chilton's showrooms in Freeport and Scarborough Maine, or online at Chiltons.com
